Winner! 2007 Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition

In a dizzyingly poetic tale of difficult choices, profound relationships and sweeping emotions, young playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney tells the story of Oya, a young woman of deep passions who is faced with difficult decisions throughout her eventful life. Boasting modern beats on top of mythic rhythms, McCraney’s play is a sexy, intoxicating portrait of a dynamic young woman whose life in the inner city is as mythic and epic as it is immediate and passionate.

In January 2007 The New York Times said, “Tarell Alvin McCraney has a long career ahead of him. Listen closely, and you might hear that thrilling sound that is one of the main reasons we go to the theater, that beautiful music of a new voice.” The Alliance brings this promising young writer to Atlanta as the winner of the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition. The play uses a rich palette of theatrical and historical conventions (including Lorca and Yoruban folk culture) to tell its story. It is surprising and original while being built on a deep cultural legacy and will be a memorable and original night in the theater.
