Tarell McCraney: "Influences on My Work"

Location: Hertz Stage

The 2007 Winner of the Alliance Theatre Kendeda graduate playwriting competition, Tarell Alvin McCraney, will discuss the influences on his work as a playwright on Monday February 4th @ 6:30pm. The Dialogue will be offered in conjunction with the Kendeda readings festival, February 4th & 5th.

In his works, McCraney uses a rich palette of theatrical and historical conventions including Lorca and Yoruban folk culture to tell its story. While still completing his graduate studies in the MFA Playwriting program at Yale, McCraney’s work began to get the attention of theatre companies in the US and abroad. After the opening of his New York production of THE BROTHERS SIZE, The New York Times raved, “Tarell Alvin McCraney has a long career ahead of him.  Listen closely, and you might hear that thrilling sound that is one of the main reasons we go to the theater, that beautiful music of a new voice.”

Question: What is the writer’s place as an agent of social change? OR How does the writer evoke social change with the written word?
